A Place for You

Text: Luke 2 Grace and peace be unto you from God who is our Creator and from Jesus Christ who is our Savior and our Friend. Amen. When my sister and I were little girls, we took part in a Christmas pageant. It’s entirely possible that we were in more than one pageant, but this is the only one I remember. My sister Maia played the angel Gabriel. She wore a simple white, A-line costume that my mom probably made, with gold rick rack around the neckline and a circle of tinsel garland on her head. In this particular pageant my memory is that she delivered the opening lines: “In those days a decree went out from Emperor Augustus…” which meant she had to learn words like Emperor and Augustus and

Text: Matthew 11:2-11 Grace and peace be unto you from God who is our Creator and from Jesus Christ who is our Savior and our Friend. Amen. Earlier this week I read a sweet article by a Presbyterian pastor titled “Who Will Decorate the Church?” She began her essay by writing that it’s too bad that Santa can’t deliver Barbie Dream Churches. What’s a Barbie Dream Church? Well, she says it’s a congregation where the volunteers are as plentiful as the money, and also where the coffee is as strong as coffee should be. Personal Sovereignty and the Baby's Nose

Text: Matthew 3:1-12 Grace and peace be unto you from God who is our Creator and from Jesus Christ who is our Savior and our Friend. Amen. Well, it had to happen. Elijah has his first cold. I mean, I know we are lucky. A friend’s little girl has a rare blood disease and they spent weeks in the hospital before she even turned two. We joke that their little girl wonders why mommy and daddy keep checking in to the world’s worst hotel. The service is terrible - the staff keeps poking you with needles. So a cold is not a big deal in the big picture. But it does bring its own unique miseries. When babies have colds they get runny noses. What do you do? You wipe their nose. I wiped Elijah’s nose fo

An Advent for Peace Happy New Year. I know you’re thinking, Karen you are a whole month early. Its December 1st not January 1st. But today we start our new liturgical year. The liturgical year is shaped by the life of Christ as we examine and proclaim God’s work for salvation through Christ Jesus. This year we will see Christ’s life through the eyes of Matthew. The writing has traditionally been attributed to St. Matthew, one of the 12 Apostles, described in the text as a tax collector. It is believed be written after 70 CE in either Antioch or southern Galilee though some scholars put it earlier. It was written primarily for a Jewish audience. Matthew’s gospel mirrors that of Mark, with abo
