Spirit of Love and Joy

This sermon was preached at Knox Presbyterian Church on Sunday June 4, 2017. The corresponding Scripture is Acts 2:1-21. Today is Pentecost, a celebration in the Christian Church of the time when the Holy Spirit rushed in and around the apostles and set their heads aflame. Some people call it the birthday of the church which - combined with a picture of the apostles with tongues of fire on their heads - brings to mind an image of a birthday cake lit up with apostle candles. Spiritual Orphans.

This sermon was preached at Knox Presbyterian Church on Sunday May 21, 2017. The text for the sermon was John 14:15-21. I saw this movie so many times as child (and I thin

Well, this Sunday June 4 is Pentecost. Pentecost marks the day when the Holy Spirit - like a rush of wind - entered a house where Jesus’ apostles were gathered after Jesus’ ascension into heaven (see Acts 2:1-21). The Holy Spirit then rested on them “like tongues of fire” (which makes the apostles a bit like birthday candles!) Through the Spirit, the apostles were united as one body, for the common good. Pentecost marks this spirit-filled day as the beginning of the early church. Indeed, you might say Pentecost is the birthday of the Christian Church in the world. Happy Birthday, Church! Please join us for worship on Sunday at 10 am, as we celebrate our unity in the Holy Spirit on Pentecos
